One thing that i should mention is that there should be another option. A true proportional system, either the list system , AMS or STV, would be the greatest step towards democratization, modernization and fair representation this country would have ever witnessed and now is the closest we have ever been to seeing it, never has the country seemed to have such a democratic deficit as now. The con-demed coalition we see is mandateless and elected in as an option nobody voted for , under proportional representation this couldnt happen as it would become and excepted fact that we would see coalitions at every election, and these would majoritarily form between like minded parties which already had similar manifesto. The con-demed coalition did not at all , especially on the most important issue, the economy. Six million liberal democrat supporters voted for delayed public sector cuts yet the party they voted for gave them immediate cuts. A similar problem lies in the fact that Six million liberal democrat supporters voted for STV and ten million conservatives supporters voted for no change, neither of them got what they want. Also we must take into account that the supposed strengths of FPTP never seemed less true, FPTP is meant to provide us with a majority government, in this instance it did not do that, it is meant to give us strong government which at the moment we cannot guarentee, and it gives us a geographical link between MPs and their area, something which AMS and STV can both achieve. Finally, the system is simply outdated as shown by the fact that most major european countries all use some kind of proportional system and their governments all work out fine, while there would always be compramise , the voter would go into the voting boothe knowing that compramise would be on the cards. And lasty as i said in the previous article , both UKIP and the BNP recieve a great deal of votes, yet recieved no seats and while we all may object to what they stand for, if they recieve the votes they must be afforded the seats. The simple truth of any system is that none are perfect but our choice is between strong governments, with over emphasised majorities , ruling with non existant mandates using FPTP to ensure they remain in power or switching to a system that forces our politicians to form coalitions that are not just in the national interrest but with national support and a real mandate.
